About Apitipi Anicinapek Nation

Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is an Algonquin (Anicinape) community on the south shore of Lake Abitibi in Northeastern Ontario, formerly known as Wahgoshig First Nation.

Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is an Algonquin community whose traditional territory stretches across a large part of what is now Northeastern Ontario and Northwest Quebec. Anicinapek is the plural of Anicinape, the name Algonquin people use for themselves. Apitipi is another name for Lake Abitibi. On March 27, 2022, the community changed its name from Wahgoshig First Nation to Apitipi Anicinapek Nation.

The reserve covers 19,239 acres. Its north end meets the south shore of Lake Abitibi. The Nation points to an archaeological presence in the area going back 8,000 years. The Abitibi Indian Reserve No. 70 was created when Treaty 9 (the James Bay Treaty) was signed at the Hudson's Bay Company post on Lake Abitibi on June 7, 1906.

The community's values include living in harmony with the land, water and sky, guided by the wisdom of the Ancestors. The Nation governs itself through Anicinape legal orders and Mino Pimatisi8in, and it plans for the next seven generations. Members speak Anicinabemo8in (Algonquin), English and French.

Community programs include:

  • Child and family services
  • Community health and crisis intervention
  • Early years and youth programming
  • Education and economic development
  • Addictions support
